Spooktober turns into Noirvember!
Week 95 posts include shots from Doctor Who (2005-2023); 25th Hour (2002); Scream 3 (2000) and Scream 4 (2011).
Scream 3
To bridge two of our favourite film seasons - scary-self-referential-slasher and noir! - here's a shot from Scream 3 where Sidney Prescott stands with a photo of her mother and poster for Kiss Me Deadly.
Both films open on a highway drive, and involve stabbings and an imposter and a big explosion.
To say more would give away too much about both.
25th Hour
Speaking of films which feature others films’ posters — Spike Lee loves a pop culture reference; it doesn't get much more direct than this.
Monty (Edward Norton) dressed in a classic white tank and bound for jail, is taunted by his arresting officer (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) right smack in front of a Cool Hand Luke poster.
SCRE4M
One reason the SCREAM films work so well is the devil in their details!
As Gale closes the door on Judy Hicks, the focus racks with the door to land on Judy, already a nice small touch. The shot doesn't cut with the door slam, instead it lets Judy glare back towards Gale and cut with her move . . .
What Judy is glaring at is the same thing we can see: through the sliver window we can see Dewey pulling Gale away from the door.
When the movie cuts into the room for Gale and Dewey's argument, they're continuing that motion into the shot, helping our brain easily slip from one scene to the next.
Doctor Who
These shots from Doctor Who 5.02 "The Beast Below" come a few minutes apart, and the split diopter makes ALL the difference!
In the first shot, as Amy (Karen Gillan) looks at the spaceship mechanisms, we can see Mandy (Hannah Sharp) over her shoulder the whole time.
A few scenes later Amy watches a video while framed in a similar size and place on screen, with someone/thing framed where Mandy was.
Without a split diopter we cannot see the Winder (two-faced cyborg), nor can we tell which face it's wearing, which VERY effectively makes it all the creepier!
