We covered a lot of scenes during our Legends of Tomorrow week, but we also took a few smashing looks (see what we did there? no? you will . . . ) at some of our favourite homages including Mean Girls, The Matrix, Star Wars: A New Hope, a time-bending Everything Everywhere All At Once, and stylistic mimics!
The Matrix
First up: the fuzz, the myth, the legend himself, Beebo, alongside his inspiration, Neo.
Mean Girls
Would it help to know the team is trying to find the Loom of Fate because the threads of the universe are being manipulated to control time and humanity, or do you just want a fun smash cut to Zari 2.0 being hot and making puns?
The latter, right?
Star Wars: A New Hope
Third and in fact longest: “Raiders of the Lost Art”
George Lucas broke the time line by dropping out of film school. Inspiration takes the shape of a famous scene . . . except because this is time travel, Legends are actually the original.
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Speaking of time travel and inspiration, this episode of Legends aired February 18, 2020, meaning at some point Ava and Co travelled ahead and decided to homage and/or inspire the Daniels . . . or maybe the other way around?
It’s a sprinkle donut instead of an everything bagel, but the premise of it giving a flannel-wearing Zari 2.0 (my heart!) a flash and insight into her alternate-universe-lives and that helping her figure out who she really is and where she belongs with this crazy family is right at home in the ethos of the #EEAAO universe.
Style!
Over on our socials we talked about how Legends changes its style to mimic certain genres, including reality TV shows complete with non-diegetic sound, Gaussian modesty blur, handheld camera work which crosses the line, and a slightly-hitchy-audio-edit.
