Week 63 was all about Logos, Incorporated, and saw posts on The Mummy (1999); Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981); Waterworld (1995); Sunshine (2007); [titles redacted] (for reasons that will become obvious), and The Andromeda Strain (1971).
The Mummy
For an extra touch this animation gives its sun some 'lens flare' to add to the illusion.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Unlike The Mummy, this shot holds the 'logo piece' - there a sun, here a mountain - in shot for about 20 seconds.
Waterworld
Waterworld is our pick for second use of the Universal globe. The shot zooms in on the world's melting ice caps as the narration warns about them turning to water; themes, visuals, and words tied neatly together.
Sunshine
In Sunshine’s near future, the sun (and thus earth) is dying. Instead of incorporating the logo's final silhouette (a la Raiders), the opening runs Searchlight backwards until it gets to - you guessed it - the sun.
Honourable Mentions
We capped off our Logos, Incorporated week with three honourable mentions.
These shots don't transition into the film's opening, but all are so iconic you can probably guess what movies they're from, anyways.
Answers are below the video, for those who want to guess before scrolling.
No need to adjust your monitors; they’re meant to look like that.
The Matrix (1999)
Scott Pilgrim vs the World (2010)
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
BONUS - The Andromeda Strain
We also looked again at one of our favourite shots from The Andromeda Strain, in context of this video which shots all 67(!!!) split diopter shots within that glorious film.
One of our faves is a shot from Stone's wife's POV (#5 in video).
On the right a man politely asks to see Dr Stone; on the left paces a man with a gun, making it a demand.
The split diopter is used to demonstrate she sees both violent threat and polite facade *with equal clarity*
