Week 25.08 posts include shots from Alien (1979); “Love Hangover” music video (2025); Two for the Road (1967); Severance (2022-current); and Severance (2022-current).
Severance
Love how this Severance 2.05 crossfade between two scenes - which share no characters and happen in quite different locations - temporarily make it look as though Mark is facing off with Natalie . . .
which in a way, as Mark pushes back against Lumon, he is.
Love Hangover
Love this cheeky little match cut from the "Love Hangover" music video which links a [CGI] olive and a bowling ball . . .
Speaking of creative use of fruits . . .
Two for the Road
This gag is part of a 2-minute montage which uses fruit and cars to tell us the story of Joanna and Mark (Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney) over the last ten years.
The timing of the banana delivery is funny, but casting it on the roadside like a used rubber, and licking one's fingers (Mark) and lips (Joanna) afterwards really takes it to the next level.
ALIEN
Alien uses its anamorphic widescreen to create beautiful group compositions. This scene of the crew locating the source of a mysterious transmission is covered in only 2 setups + 1 insert. Yet it feels very dynamic.
The actors, their performances, and especially their shifting eyelines create multiple points of interest; this means "we cut with our mind's eye".
Note how Ash (Ian Holm) changes positions at the midpoint (0:46), and how that freshens up the compositions.
This is also Ash beginning to assert himself, ultimately culminating in him making the decision that will doom the ship . . .
Severance
These two shots from Severance 2.05 "Trojan's Horse" come moments apart, and demonstrate how Helly and Helena are split (and Mark doesn't know who is who), as well as how Mark's attempt to put his two selves or halves back together is messing with his brain.
